Step 1: Cut frame pieces to desired dimensions

Our mirror is 48″x40″ and I plan to wrap it in a 4″ frame so I cut 2 pieces at 56″ and 2 pieces at 48″.

Step 2: Add the rabbet groove

I used our jointer to cut this groove because it was the easiest method with the tools I have. If I did not have this option I would just use a rabbet router bit.

Step 3: Cut your miters

Now that all your pieces have a rabbet joint, cut each end at a 45-degree angle to your desired length. Assure that all of your pieces are evenly cut. If it’s a rectangle like ours, make sure the two long pieces are identical and your two short pieces are identical.

Step 4: Make sure everything lines up and mark the joints

I laid the frame on the floor to make sure all the miters lined up and looked nice and clean. Then I marked out where I will place the dominos. If you do not have a Domino, I would use a biscuit jointer or dowels.

Step 5: Glue it all together

Now that you have everything how you want it, glue this thing together! Once clamped and moved off the floor I let it sit overnight before I applied any pressure to the frame.

Step 6: Rough sand the frame and add the inner chamfer

I would recommend you cut the chamfer in at least 2 passes to ensure it comes out nice, clean, and doesn’t chip out. Chamfer bit for inner frame profile: Click here https://amzn.to/2UE7cnF

Tip* Make sure to clean up the corners with a chisel if you want square corners – or router the pieces before assembly.

Step 7: Sand and apply your finish

We finished sanded our frame to 120g and applied Rubio cotton white as the finish. Any finish will do for a project like this as it will be hung on the wall and won’t get daily ‘use’. You just want to seal the wood.

Step 8: Add the mirror to your frame

Carefully place your mirror into the frame and use your attachment method of choice. I used these 1/8 inch offset clips because this was a spur of the moment build and it’s what we had on hand. The clips worked well but there are many other options available. Click here: https://amzn.to/39ppf6N

Step 9: Add your wall hanging system of choice

We used these heavy picture hanging cleats that we had on hand. They work great for large items like this mirror, no need to try to measure out hooks, just install the wall cleat with the handy level and hang up your piece! Hangman Hanging Hardware: Click here https://amzn.to/39pp7El
